HISTORY OF CRESWICK

Creswick and Hepburn Shire have a rich cultural history, which began with our Traditional Owners and includes the influx of migrant communities during Victoria’s gold rush era. Our cultural diversity is preserved and celebrated in many ways, from festivals and events through to museums and the work of historical societies.

The historic and picturesque Victorian gold mining town of Creswick is cradled between ancient volcanic hilltops and has a resident population of more than 3,000. Creswick lies at the heart of the central goldfields, just 16km north of Ballarat and the neighbouring iconic tourism towns of Clunes and Daylesford, the Hepburn spa country, the Macedon Ranges, and Pyrenees wine regions.

Built on the proceeds of rich gold deposits mined in the 1850s, Creswick's main street features fine examples of grand architecture so reminiscent of that bygone era.

Beyond the Djuwang Baring trail network and the stunning bushland, Creswick is a charming town offering a variety of experiences.
Known as the birthplace of notable Australians such as Prime Minister John Curtin and artist Norman Lindsay, Creswick is as beautiful as it is historic.

Stroll along the elegantly curved main street, lined with shady plane trees and grand buildings, and imagine life during the bustling gold boom of the 1850s. Creswick is also the birthplace of reforestation, thanks to the efforts of forestry pioneer John La Gerche. Today, visitors can enjoy La Gerche’s legacy through majestic local street plantings and a walking trail dedicated to his work.

Relax in local cafes and restaurants that showcase regional produce, or tee off at the international-class golf course at the RACV Goldfields Resort. Creswick offers a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and modern amenities, making it a must-visit destination in the Hepburn Shire.
